...Francesco Cadeddu was born December 14, 1975 in San Gavino Monreale (Sardinia -Italy), but has always lived in Villanovaforru a small town about 50 km away from Cagliari (Sardinia -Italy).

He started sculpting the stone in the early 90s. The passion for sculpture and the need to innovate through experimentation, led him to realize more complex forms with different types of stone. He has always loved visual art in all its forms, creativity is the basis of his works. He's a self-taught artist, while not undertaking studies in the field, his hunger for creativity has fueled the search of knowledge through the study and interpretation of manuals and books devoted to the visual arts.

In 1995 he moved to Cagliari to attend university, in those years sculpting is put on hold.

His marriage in 2004 leads to the eventual return to his hometown, Villanovaforru, where he creates his own fully equipped workshop. The shift in the use of new materials follows a gradual and intuitive path: it goes from soft "trachyte" to compact "sandstone", to get to the porous "lava stones."

Only in 2005 he began to work with the hardest "river stone" on which are embedded the glossy "obsidian" forms. The visual effect is pleasing and original at the same time, but the experimental phase doesn't seem completed yet.

In 2007, he started carving wood. His early works featured simple shapes, with insert details obtained through the processing of obsidian. Since that time his works reinforce the link between these two materials, different but complementary, through the careful study of shapes and their interaction. Over the years, the mutual influence between wood and obsidian continues its improvement, reaching in some works a very strong interaction and complementarity.

What people say about him...

"Self-taught, he began to carve at a young age, his early works from the nineties are stone sculptures, but from 2007 he devoted himself exclusively to wood carving and sculpting, recovering raw material like roots, rocks and logs. His focus is nature, that generates forms, which he revises and confers a new sense. The wooden block comes to life in his intuition, it turns and fits the creative idea. The second step is a meticulous smoothing and the materialization of harmonious anthropomorphic figures, like motherhood, religious figures and surreal forms with a strong emotional charge. The masses come to life in a game in which a continuous narrowing retracts the forms. Each work is enhanced by embedded pieces of obsidian, the polish helps to give light and a sense of enchantment that surrounds them. Sometimes two pieces of obsidian become eyes that catch the eyes of those who watch them and communicate with them. Sometimes the eyes are closed but still managed to convey strong emotions. The surfaces, lines and spaces are treated in such a way to prevent any break or interruption to the sight. The latter, in fact, runs fast on a smooth surface until it focuses on pieces of obsidian, and only then can linger on the details and connect the lines in the forms to the subjects suggested by the artist, depicting life in all facets, from the deep anguish and pain to a feeling of general well-being."
